Choosing a barcode format
Code 128 is the general-purpose choice for shipping, inventory and internal labels because it encodes letters and numbers compactly. Code 39 is older but very widely supported. EAN-13 and UPC-A are the retail product codes used at the point of sale, and they require registered numbers from GS1 if you plan to sell through stores.

- Retailers require numbers registered with GS1. A free generator can draw the barcode, but it cannot give you an official product number.
- Why does my EAN-13 code get rejected?
